Africentric theories of African American personality: Basic constructs and assessment. - We situate the current discussion within the framework of the African-centered psychology movement. Specifically, this chapter focuses on articulating the major features of the Africentric approaches, because they have received by far the least attention in the literature and, in our opinion, represent the cutting-edge approach in this field of study. There are four models (or distinct sets of ideas about African American personality) that have emerged in the literature that meet the criteria for the Africentric approach. These models are: Wade Nobles's (1980) Extended-Self Model, Na'im Akbar's (1979) Divine or Spiritual Core Model, Robert Williams's (1981) WEUSI Model, and Kobi Kambon's (1992) African Self-Consciousness Model.
